Amphidromus areolatus (L. Pfeiffer, 1861)

From eastern Thailand and probably other areas of SE Asia. Very similar to Amphidromus xiengensis Morlet, 1891. In fact they may be the same species. The major difference is in size. Amphidromus areolatus are smaller ranging in size from 20 to 25 mm. There are several color patterns often resembling Amphidromus xiengensis. One unique pattern features a reddish ground color. Interestingly, this is probably a minor mutation where the color of the narrow reddish band on the base of the shell switches positions with the yellow that normally covers most of the shell. Note that the subsutural band on the reddish shells is always yellow whereas on the yellow shells it is often red.
