Pomacea maculata G. Perry, 1810 At Winn-Dixie Parkway In Western Duval County

Video Of The Site And Snails

During a field survey on 7/2/2015 a large population of Pomacea maculata was discovered in a lake/borrow pit on the north side of US-90 (West Beaver Street) immediately west of the Winn-Dixie Parkway overpass in western Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida. This location is about 1.92 miles east of the intersection of US-90/US-301 in downtown Baldwin, Florida. A large number of Pomacea egg clutches was present along the lake/borrow pit periphery, and live snails and empty shells were not uncommon. Taking advantage of the local underground drainage system, the Pomacea had spread to the roadside swale along US-90 between the lake/borrow pit and the road (living specimens, empty shells, eggs), to a drainage ditch on the south side of US-90 (empty shells), and a drainage ditch on the south side of the CSX Transportation railroad tracks which are south of and run parallel to US-90 (empty shells). It's uncertain how the Pomacea initially got into the lake/borrow pit, which was constructed between 1999 and 2003.
