Strombus alatus Gmelin, 1791 Living Specimen In Situ

On sand, shallow water, minus tide, Tolomato River, St. Augustine Inlet, St. Johns, County, FL (103 mm.) 6/4/2008. Digital image by Brian Marshall. This species is present offshore in northeast Florida at SCUBA diving depths and empty shells in various stages of decay are not uncommonly found on the beach. However, the above illustrated shell is only the second known living specimen to have been found intertidally in northeast Florida. The only other specimen was found at Matanzas Inlet, St. Johns County by Mr. Fred Chauvin on 5/30/1976.
