Pomacea canaliculata (Lamarck, 1822) Floating At Surface

Like other members of the genus, Pomacea canaliculata with their lightweight shells, have the ability to control their buoyancy and literally float at the surface of the water. However, while this obviously has practical applications, it at times leaves them floundering at the surface unable to submerge. The young adult illustrated below (photographed on 8/12/2005) was removed from its aquarium home for a photography session, and after its reintroduction, spent considerable time acquiring negative buoyancy. The situation is much less pronounced with fully adult specimens with their thicker and heavier shells.
