Pomacea canaliculata Striped Specimens (continued)

On 8/31/2007 two Pomacea canaliculata with striped shells and dark mottled colored animals were collected from the lake at Hatton Chase and placed in captivity. That evening the larger of the two (63 mm. in length) deposited an abbreviated egg clutch (illustrated below, left).  Over the next two days the female deposited two additional egg clutches (illustrated below, center and right). The egg clutch deposited on 8/31/2007 began hatching during the morning of 9/14/2007 - despite its somewhat damaged appearance. A few of the hatchlings from that egg clutch are shown below eleven days after hatching and measuring about 1.5 mm. in length. The hatchlings include the normal light yellow colored shell with yellow animal as well as striped specimens with a darker colored animal similar to the mother. The exact ratio of the two forms hatched from the egg clutch will be determined when the snails attain a larger size. Several previous captive hatching experiments conducted using stock from the two other locations in Duval County where P. canaliculata are found resulted only in normally colored offspring with no striped shells or specimens with a dark animal (See: Pomacea canaliculata hatchlings).
