Comparison Of The Animals Of A Pomacea paludosa (Say, 1829) With A Normally Colored Shell And A Specimen With A Gold Colored Shell

This live rare golden colored specimen was found feeding on vegetation near the shoreline of Lake Montgomery, Lake City, Columbia County, Florida on 9/14/2011 (40.9 mm.). Note that while the shell is golden in coloration, the living animal and operculum are comparable to a Pomacea paludosa with a normal colored shell (see above image). Based on anecdotal information from a reliable source, there is a possibility that the Pomacea paludosa in Lake Montgomery with gold colored shells are the result of selective breeding by a local snail enthusiast many years ago.
