Euglandina sowerbyana (L. Pfeiffer, 1846)

Tabasco State, Mexico. Collected by Marcos Vinagrillo. This specimen is believed to be the largest native terrestrial snail shell ever found in North America, which includes Central America.

Below is the original description of Euglandina sowerbyana sowerbyana (L. Pfeiffer, 1846: 32, species 20).

Euglandina sowerbyana original description

Seeing that this description appeared in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London 1846, a sense of déjà-vu was aroused after our recent experience collating the Pfeiffer descriptions of Helix strumosa and Tudora nobilis, which were read to the Zoological Society of London on March 9, 1852 and appeared in the Proceedings ... 1852, saw actual publication over two years later, some research seem prudent. The issue was finally resolved after the discovery of on-line version of ZSL (1893), which is a concordance of the early years of this journal. The process of discovery was long and tedious due to the byzantine organization of the digital library directories involved. As it turns out the Pfeiffer description was published later in the year of its reading.
