Pomacea canaliculata (Lamarck, 1822) Attack Survivor

Even in the best of circumstances fully adult Pomacea canaliculata are usually very rough in appearance and readily show their age.  However, occasionally a real veteran is found that gives new meaning to the word "rough."  The 54 mm. specimen illustrated below, found on 9/12/2005, somehow managed to survive what apparently was a vicious attack by a predator. Even the snail's operculum showed a similar level of trauma but too was repaired.
