Gopher Tortoise [Gopherus polyphemus] |
| This large Gopher Tortoise was photographed on southern Big Talbot Island in Duval, County on 9/24/2004. It was obvious that the tortoise was not particularly pleased to see the photographer as it quickly retreated into its burrow dug into the high bluffs overlooking the beach at Nassau Sound. From the number of active burrows in the area, it would appear that a large colony is in residence - an area which not only offers easy burrowing but ready access to both the beach and forested areas. Although not considered endangered or threatened with extinction, the Gopher Tortoise is listed by Florida authorities as a "Species of Special Concern" primarily due to the loss of habitat. |
