Busycotypus spiratus (Lamarck, 1816)

Buried in sand, Mayport Naval Station beach, Duval County, Florida, 1/31/2007 (49 mm.)

This species is uncommon in northeast Florida and is very rarely found on the open Atlantic beaches. Instead it prefers more sheltered waters such as inlets/sounds. The illustrated specimen is only the 4th specimen found on the beach by the photographer in 17 years of active shelling.
