Ponds At U. S. Postal Facility On Commonwealth Ave., Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida

While exploring for terrestrial mollusks in northwestern Duval County on 5/13/2010, a thriving Pomacea paludosa (Say, 1829) [Florida Applesnail] population was discovered in two interconnected roadside retention ponds in front of the large U. S. Postal Service facility on Commonwealth Avenue just east of the intersection of Imeson Road. Fresh Pomacea egg clutches, as well as living specimens and empty shells, were in evidence at both locations. How the Pomacea came to be in the retention ponds, which are not connected to any other waterway, remains a mystery.
