Scarlet Kingsnake [Lampropeltis triangulum elapsoides] Juvenile

This juvenile Scarlet Kingsnake was discovered hiding beneath leaf litter in the roadside swale near the Route 13 bridge over Six Mile Creek in far western St. Johns County, Florida on 9/7/2008. Despite its diminutive size (6-7 inches), the specimen was extremely aggressive and put on quite a show by repeatedly striking at the photographer.
