Six Mile Creek/Roadside Drainge Ditch On Imeson Road, Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida

While exploring for terrestrial mollusks in northwestern Duval County on 2/7/2010, evidence of a Pomacea paludosa (Say, 1829) [Florida Applesnail] population was discovered in roadside drainage ditches along the west side of Imeson Road near both the north and south forks of Six Mile Creek. A single empty Pomacea shell was discovered in the ditch immediately adjacent to the north fork of Six Mile Creek (see image below). Two Pomacea paludosa egg clutches were also discovered on a concrete culvert just south of the south fork of the creek - a location about 0.10 miles distant. While Pomacea are apparently present in both branches of the creek and had colonized nearby drainage ditches, recent excavation of the respective ditches by county workers had rendered them both temporarily unsuitable for Pomacea.
