Strombus alatus Gmelin, 1791 Living Specimen

In one foot of water, minus tide, inside Matanzas Inlet, St. Johns County, Florida 1/21/2011 (104 mm.). Digital image by Brian Marshall. This species is present offshore in northeast Florida at SCUBA diving depths and empty shells in various stages of decay are not uncommonly found on the beach. However, the above illustrated shell is only the third known living specimen to have been found in Matanzas Inlet. The first Matanzas Inlet specimen was found by Mr. Fred Chauvin on 5/30/1976 and a second (a small juvenile) was found by Joel Wooster on 4/9/2009.
