Daedalochila auriculata (Say, 1818) Ocala Liptooth At Kentucky Branch Bridge

Switzerland, St. Johns County, Florida

On November 8, 2009 fellow land snail enthusiast Brian Marshall discovered a single empty Daedalochila auriculata shell at the bottom of the roadside swale near the water on the southeastern bridge approach to Kentucky Branch on State Road 13 in Switzerland about 4.3 miles south of Fruit Cove (GPS: 30.03197N 081.40036 - WGS-84 Datum) in northwestern St. Johns County, Florida. The next day this reporter visited the site and found an additional four empty Daedalochila shells as well as one living specimen. The site was revisited on 11/13/2009 and five additional live specimens and two empty shells were found. Based upon the visits, it is likely the Daedalochila population at this location is relatively small. Contributing to that assumption is fact that the site is only a couple of hundred yards from the St. Johns River, is subject to tidal fluctuations/vagaries, and the water is therefore brackish.
