Daedalochila uvulifera (Shuttleworth, 1852) Peninsula Liptooth In St. Johns County, Florida Near US-1

During a field survey on August 23, 2015, a single empty Daedalochila uvulifera shell was found in the roadside swale on the south side of International Golf Parkway (also known as Nine Mile Road) just west of the intersection of that thoroughfare and US-1. A cursory search failed to yield any additional empty shells or live specimens. A nearby fence precluded a more thorough investigation. Also present in the area, but on the north side of the road, was a single empty Daedalochila auriculata (Say, 1818) Peninsula Liptooth shell.

This is only the second location in St. Johns County where Daedalochila uvulifera has been found. Interestingly, the other location is also along International Golf Parkway but at St. Marks Pond Boulevard which is located about one half mile to the west. A pair of Daedalochina uvulifera from that locality are illustrated below along with the much larger specimen found near US-1. Daedalochila auriculata are also present at the St. Marks Pond Boulevard site.

This view is looking to the east towards US-1 and the Florida East Coast Railroad tracks.
