Bulimulus sporadicus (d’Orbigny, 1835) From Evergreen Avenue (5/2/2015)

During previous visits to this site live Bulimulus were found only in modest numbers, but during a follow-up visit on 5/2/2015, thousands of snails were found clinging to a CSX Transportation railroad rail west of Evergreen Avenue. This glut of specimens extended for a distance of at least 400 yards. Interestingly, the snails were present only on the northernmost rail and all of the snails were facing generally south. This is not the first time or location that the species has demonstrated an affinity for railroad rails.  However, this is the first time that it has involved such a large number of specimens - all uniformly arranged.
