Euglandina rosea (Férussac, 1821) Predation On Daedalochila subclausa (Pilsbry, 1899)

On 5/25/2010 a pair of medium sized living Euglandina rosea (41.7 and 48.7 mm.) were collected from the Daedalochila subclausa habitat near the intersection of Imeson and Pritchard Roads in western Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida in an attempt to determine if the species was preying on Daedalochila. The two Euglandina were then dissected and their gut contents examined. The smaller of the Euglandina was found to contain a single Polygyra cereolus (Mühlfeld, 1816) [Southern Flatcoil] and a microscopic snail later identified as a juvenile of this species. However, the larger Euglandina contained a pair of adult Daedalochila subclausa as well as three partially digested microscopic snails later identified as two juvenile P. cereolus and a juvenile D. subclausa. The empty Euglandina shell and the two adult Daedalochila subclausa extracted from its gut are pictured below. The larger of the two Daedalochila measures 8 mm.
