Cactus Moth Caterpillars [Cactoblastis cactorum]

These Cactus Moth caterpillars were photographed on cactus pads (Opuntia stricta) in the back dunes of the beach at Mayport Naval Station, Duval County, Florida on 12/8/2007. When photographed, a group of the caterpillars (25-30) appeared to be en-route from one cactus plant to another nearby specimen. Severe damage to several cactus pads was readily apparent. This invasive moth species was first noted in south Florida in 1989 and it has continued to spread northward along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts since that time.
