Boreoscala blainei (Clench and Turner, 1953)

Boreoscala blainei (Clench and Turner, 1953)

This species is known from Northeast Florida by a single (17 mm.) specimen collected in the beach drift at Fernandina Beach, Nassau County, Florida in April, 1972. There is an uncanny similarity to Boreoscala zelebori (Dunker, 1866) of New Zealand, and we are unconvinced, based on published records, that this taxon lives in the W. Atlantic. Boreoscala magellanica (Philippi, 1845) is a stouter relative from southern South America. Because of the conspicuous intriticalx and wide geographic range, this taxon and Boreoscala are considered separate from Epitonium at the generic level; however, Boreoscala may prove synonymous with Cirsotrema.
