Great Blue Heron [Ardea herodias] |
| This intense specimen was photographed on the shoreline of Lake Oneida on the campus of the University of North Florida in southeastern Duval County, Florida on 5/17/2005. The Heron wasn't pleased to see the photographer and reluctantly fled upon each approach only to quickly return when the "coast was clear." The birds persistence was soon explained by the presence of many bedding sunfish in the shallow water nearby. The sunfish were aggressively defending their respective territories and thus were not nearly as cautious as the situation would dictate. |
