Axelella smithii (Dall, 1888) Smith’s Nutmeg

    Ex batfish from a depth of 140 ft., 55 miles east of Ponte Vedra, St. Johns County, Florida by scallop boats 3/1988 (17.5 mm.)

    This species is currently placed in Axelella R. E. Petit, 1988. Olssonella R. E. Petit, 1970 is a preoccupied synonym. Not congeneric with Agatrix R. E. Petit, 1967, of which Trigonostoma agassizii Dall, 1889 is the type. Many of our shells exceed the size range in Abbott (1974): “8 to 10 mm.” Often with a rich lavender aperture. Enlarges known range vs. Abbott (1974): “Off the Carolinas."
