Pomacea paludosa (Say, 1829) Florida Applesnail Depositing Eggs

As Pomacea paludosa apparently only deposits egg clutches at night, it is difficult to observe this activity let alone obtain photographs. The female shown below was found mating in a small lake in Southeastern Duval County, Florida on September 27, 2005, and along with five companions, was placed in a small aquarium for further observations. The evening of September 29th the female deposited at least one, possibly two, egg clutches on the side of the aquarium.  While the female was doing her part to insure survival of the species, her companions were busily consuming iceberg lettuce.  View Completed Egg Clutch
