Attempted predation on Pomacea maculata at aquatic center lake

During a 7/15/2006 visit to the lake the two specimens shown below were found which showed evidence of attempted predation by a yet unknown species. The two are the first Pomacea found in the lake which possessed this type of shell damage and interestingly both specimens were found in the same area which indicates that a single predator may be responsible for the damage to both snails. There was no corresponding damage to the ventral surface of the shells as would be expected if the damage was the result of a "bite" by a mammalian predator.
