Busycon perversum (Linnaeus, 1758) Mating

    A mating pair were discovered in muddy sand on the south side of St. Augustine inlet in the Tolomato River on 2/28/2010. The female, estimated to be about 300 mm. in length, is totally buried in the substrate with only the tip of the siphonal canal visible (see arrow below). As is usually the case, the male is much smaller than the female and in many instances the female has several males in attendance.
