Daedalochila subclausa (Pilsbry, 1899) Suwannee Liptooth In St. Johns Co., Florida

During a survey trip to St. Johns County on November 27, 2009, snail enthusiast Brian Marshall discovered a single empty Daedalochila subclausa shell on the bank of drainage ditch adjacent to a fallow potato field on Pacetti Road (also known as County Road 13A) in western St. Johns County, Florida. The site is located on the east side of the road (GPS: 29.55266N 081.29453W - WGS-84 Datum) about 0.3 miles north of Gracewood Lane. Brian, along with this reporter, revisited the site the next day and an additional eight empty shells were discovered. However no living specimens could be located. This reporter subsequently revisited the site on two occasions and cumulatively three additional empty shells (all juveniles) were found including a single specimen on the opposite (west) side of Pacetti Road. Keying on this discovery, Brian again visited the site on 12/5/2009 and checked the west side of the road at the north end of the potato field near Point Creek Road (29.55444N 081.29440W - WGS-84 Datum) - a location about 0.3 miles north of the location where the empty shells were initially found on November 27th. There he found 35 D. subclausa specimens including one live adult. The next day this reporter and Brian revisited the same location and easily collected a couple hundred additional Daedalochila including two live specimens. Additional surveying over the next several days by this reporter and Harry Lee indicates that population on the west side of the road extends for a distance of at least 0.15 miles. Surveys of the area continue.
