Aurelia aurita Moon Jellyfish

    The Moon Jellyfish is the second most common Jellyfish found on northeast Florida beaches - usually washed onto the beach following sustained on-shore winds or after rough seas such as those associated with a passing storm. The illustrated specimen (about eight inches across) is large for the species and most specimens found are considerably smaller. The key to identifying this species are the horshoe-shaped gonads - easily visible in the image below.
