Angustipes ameghini (Gambetta, 1923) Black-velvet Leatherleaf

Angustipes ameghini (Gambetta, 1923) Black-velvet Leatherleaf

The illustrated specimen (about 45 mm. in length) was discovered crawling across a sidewalk following rain at a veterinary clinic at 2520 St. Johns Bluff Road in southeastern Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida during the morning of 5/18/2007. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first time that this species has officially been recorded from the county and northeast Florida. Anecdotal information from clinic employees indicates that the species is not uncommon at that location but is only observed following wet weather.

This slug was originally described from Paraguay and first detected in the United States (Mobile AL, and New Orleans LA) in 1960 (Dundee and Watt, 1961). The species has been found in Florida since at least the early 1980's.
