Busycotypus canaliculatus (Linnaeus, 1758) Crabbed Albino

During a visit to the Michael B. Scanlon Boat Ramp on the St. Johns River in Mayport village, Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida on 2/5/2013 several boxes of discarded mollusks were found near a trash receptacle. This mollusk assembly, just as they came from the sea (?river?), included deceased specimens with the animals intact, living specimens, and crabbed shells of Busycon perversum, Busycon carica, and Busycotypus canaliculatus. Thirteen B. canaliculatus were present to include the crabbed albino specimen pictured above. Observations by this reporter over the years have confirmed that one in thirteen Busycotypus canaliculatus found in Duval County has a pure white shell.
