Mesodon thyroidus (Say, 1817) White-lip Globe In A Beer Bottle

This beer bottle, with a Mesodon thyroidus in the neck, was found amongst vegetation in the roadside swale along County Road 220 (Doctors Inlet Road) 0.2 miles NW of Knight Boxx Road, Clay County, Florida on 1/20/2010. It was initially thought that a living Mesodon was present and was simply using the bottle as a source of shelter. After photographing this novelty, the vegetation was cleared away and the bottle was examined closer. It was discovered that bottom portion of the bottle had been broken away away and that the shell was empty and firmly lodged in the bottle. It appears likely that at some time in the past a living Mesodon did in fact crawl into the broken bottle seeking shelter, became lodged in the narrow bottle neck and subsequently perished.
